Olympic Fever!!

This entry was posted on 2016-08-15 by caroline.

I am sure there is no one in his country who has not been caught up in the tremendous excitement of the Olympics so far – whatever sports are your favourites - and the many others that we watch with interest and amazement - what has really hit me this time around is the tremendous dedication and the sheer hard work that all these amazing sportsmen and women have put in to achieve their goal. It is an achievement in itself just to be picked for the team but that elusive Olympic medal is what keeps them all going through the pain and sacrifice of training at the top level.

In a lot of ways our jockeys have to have a similar mindset, racing is a very competitive sport, they must be fit, strong, often at extremely light weights and the competition for rides is fierce – they can’t let up for a moment or someone else will take a ride that might just win and give them the big break they need. As we are a smaller yard I often use the younger up and coming jockeys as they are the ones willing to come in and school the horses and get to know them before a race. The hours they spend behind the wheel going to different yard sand making contacts is amazing.

So good luck to all the aspiring lads and lasses out there, I hope I can help a few on the way up the ladder.

All the horses are beginning to harden up now and some started cantering last week. We are so lucky at Spring Barton to have such wonderful hacking, the horses are being challenged with the long hills and rewarded with lovely wide grass verges on which to canter, so we are well on course for some early autumn runners – La Madonnina continues in good heart and she will run on Friday at Bangor if the ground allows.
